Four Simple Ways To Improve Employee Productivity When you are running your own business, it is easy to get bogged down and let the little things slide. At first, this is not likely to matter much. Everything will still run relatively smoothly. But, over time, the little things that you have missed can build up and start to have a more serious impact. Here are a few ways to improve productivity. Fix poor signage The bigger your business premises get, the more time everyone wastes walking from A to B. This is largely unavoidable. But, what can be prevented are people getting lost and wasting time. Good business signage like the kind you can buy from mydoorsign can really help with this. It can be used to remind people of which way to go when they are visiting a part of the business premises that are new to them. They will waste less time wondering around and will not have to disturb other colleagues to find their way. Good signage will also help your visitors. Stay organized and create a clutter-free environment The more organized an employee’s workspace is the more productive they will be. Ensure your employees take proper breaks In an attempt to cut costs, an awful lot of businesses have cut back drastically on employee breaks. On paper, this looks like a good idea. But, it may, in fact, turn out to be a false economy. The longer someone focuses on a task, the more fatigued their brain gets. Yet, they only have to take a 5-minute break to return to the job re-invigorated. Again, there are plenty of studies that back this up. So, consider installing a drink’s station somewhere that is easy to get to. Or, send a trolley around, twice a day that is laden with healthy drinks and snacks. That five-minute break and interaction with someone else can make a big difference. Better still, reinstate tea and lunch breaks. Don’t let the meetings culture develop Having too many meetings is a very easy trap to fall into. If you are not careful, people will start to have meetings about meetings. On average, office workers spend a crazy 31 hours a month attending meetings. Most of the time, they are unproductive. Often, people have to sit there for an hour or more, just so they can make a 2-minute contribution. This is very frustrating and stressful for them. Usually, they are acutely aware of what a waste of their time doing that is. They know that there is a big pile of work on their desk waiting for their return. So, if you have not done so for a while, do a quick audit. See what is going on and work to correct things if the number of meetings being held has gotten out of hand. Just implementing one or two of the above changes will make a difference. So, don’t delay, give one of them a go and youre sure to improve productivity.

Mastering Hygiene on LinkedIn - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Have you done a LinkedIn Checkup lately? If not, now is the time. It wont take long and its not hard. Over the last few weeks I have written a series of posts about Mastering LinkedIn. The topics were purposely short and consumable. I created short videos for each of them and posted the written steps in each post too. This post is about putting them all together to keep your LinkedIn profile up to date and to insure you have a few tips tricks to insure you are getting the most out of LinkedIn. Some of these are fairly obvious and you might already be doing them on a regular basis. If so, good on ya! Others are not as obvious and may not have crossed your mind. One of the most common gaffes I see (no thanks to LinkedIn) is the Over-Share of LinkedIn postings. This is an easy fix and takes just a few seconds. But, as mentioned, LinkedIn by default has it turned on. In the  Mastering the Under-Share on LinkedIn  post I talk about this and show you how to Share Wisely. Starting at the Start When you are new to LinkedIn its not always easy to decide who to make connections with and how.  Im not a fan of the generic I’d like to add you to my professional network on LinkedIn invitation.  I think its lazy and doesnt let the person you are trying to connect with know who you are, why you are trying to connect and to be honest Whats In It For Them.   This is why I wrote the  Mastering the LinkedIn Connection  post. The idea is to stamp out that generic connection request. Exceptions: As with all things there are exceptions. If you know the person you want to connect with on LinkedIn then sending a generic request is sort of OK. Asking someone to connect on LinkedIn is very easy. The LinkedIn app makes sure its easy. However, that doesnt mean it needs to be lazy. Take a moment to read the  Mastering the LinkedIn Connection  post and watch the video. Then, start making personalized requests. Personalizing a LinkedIn request does (at least) two things: Lets the person know you are real and asking from a genuine position. Allows (forces) you to think about the request and why you want to connect with them. Ooops, I didnt mean to send that If you sent a LinkedIn request and realized later that you didnt mean to send it to that person. Or that you want to pull the request back and add a personalized note. Not to worry its easy. This is why I wrote the  Mastering the LinkedIn Unvite  post. To make it easy to Unvite someone. This is not meant to be mean spirited. As mentioned in the post and on the video there are times where things change with you, with your work, with your thinking and you want to adjust and perhaps recall a LinkedIn connection request. Its not the end of the world and its not even likely going to be noticed by the person whom you have retracted your request. Im Looking for Something its kind of a secret Another often overlooked feature of LinkedIn is the ability to search for things across the LinkedIn networks in Stealth Mode. As mentioned in the  Mastering the LinkedIn Private View  post there are times when you want to protect your privacy on LinkedIn. Sometimes its for a job search and sometimes its for investigating and evaluating candidates for roles you are looking to hire and fill. Other times its so you can have a little privacy while you are looking at competitive offerings or even checking on how your own companies information appears without having your team know its you. This is why I wrote the  Mastering the LinkedIn Private View  post. For when you need to be a little more Stealthy. Again, this is not a tricky or sneaky way of getting around anything. Its just a way to allow you to search for things with varying degrees of privacy. I give kudos to LinkedIn for allowing this capability within the LinkedIn network. Clearly they understand that there are times when a little privacy is needed to do what you need to do. Good Hygiene is Easy Its all just good LinkedIn hygiene. Its never been easier to do and sometimes it just takes a few simple tips tricks to insure you are getting: The visibility you deserve That you are sharing what you want, and That you can view in private when desired or Pull back a LinkedIn connection request I hope these tips helped you manage your LinkedIn profile and presence. Seven Lotus Sevens - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog Saturday I was riding my motorcycle to Svendborg. At the toll plaza for the Great Belt bridge, I noticed a Lotus Seven in front of me. And another one. And two more in the next lane! They got through before me, so I floored it across the bridge to try and catch them to get a closer look. (Fortunately for me the speed trap was on the other side of the road.) I passed them a little later, and there were seven of them in all. Read, blue, green, yellow and silver ones, from different scandinavian countries. It was a beautiful sight. Anyway, I turned off the bridge towards Svendborg and they followed, so that for the next 20 km or so, I was leading a convoy of Lotus Sevens. That felt pretty good. Thanks for visiting my blog. 6 steps to new networking contacts - You know networking is one of the most effective ways to  land a job. When you have a referral, its more likely that someone will review your résumé, and you are statistically more likely to win an interview when someone you know suggests your name for an opportunity. Despite the numbers proving networking is helpful, many job seekers resist it and worry that its nothing more than asking people for help, which some find difficult at best and abhorrent in the extreme cases. You dont want to attend a bunch of in-person networking events so you can balance a plate and glass in one hand and learn to reach for your business cards with the other hand, while simultaneously shaking hands with your new contacts?  Alan Gregerman, consultant and author of The Necessity of Strangers, suggests that the real purpose of networking isnt simply to land a job, but instead to learn new things, grow as a person and professional and to build truly meaningful relationships with people who are often very different than us. Gregerman offers the following six ways to enhance your network: 1. Demonstrate your desire to learn and grow.  People appreciate when new contacts appear exceptionally interested in what they have to say. When you can demonstrate how interested you are in learning something new rather than simply seeing the contact as a meal ticket to a referral, youre likely to be much more successful. Gregerman says you should indicate that you care about what new contacts do, what they know and ask about their key challenges and opportunities. Additionally, he mentions that it helps when you are somewhat humble when you engage and dont act as if  you already know everything. 2. Be open to, and curious about, a world of new ideas and possibilities.  Success comes to people who are always seeking new knowledge and perspectives that will make them more well-rounded people, better thinkers and ultimately better employees, Gregerman asserts. Demonstrate your enthusiasm and interest and ability to take on new assignments that require you to take initiative. Youll find it much easier to engage your new contacts when you demonstrate you have an open and curious mind. 3. Build a diverse and inspiring network.  Get out of your traditional networking rut and stop spending time with people who are just like you. Gregerman suggests that meeting people who are different can help you stretch your thinking and skills and open new doors that you never dreamed possible.  Social media  is a great tool to expand your network, especially when you use it as a stepping stone to meeting your new contacts in person. You can also make an effort to attend new in-person networking events and to conscientiously meet new people. 4. Share your knowledge and connections freely.  Real networking is a two-way street in which both parties share their best ideas, insights and connections with each other, Gregerman explains. Be generous if you expect to benefit from networking. Its important to give as much as you expect to gain. 5. Talk to strangers.  Every person you meet or pass is a potential networking contact. Dont underestimate the opportunities you have each day to meet someone new who will  expand your network  and could make a difference in your career. 6. Thank everyone you meet along the way.  Dont take your networking contacts for granted. Follow up with them. For example, if someone refers you to a person who helps you land an opportunity or who is exceptionally helpful, be sure to circle back with that referring person to let him or her know how helpful the referral was for you.
