These two things are the most important parts of any venture
These two things are the most important parts of any ventureThese two things are the most important parts of any ventureWithout commitment youll never start. But more importantly, without consistency youll never finish.?- ?Denzel WashingtonThese days, we repeatedly hear about the process. Its the process.Yes, it is. And when we give it more definition, we realize that the process does matter. The process is all of the steps that comprise ANY endeavor. We canleid focus only on the prize at the end. Its the journey that counts, of course. Its how we plan and execute on that process and see it through to completion. Were best to focus on that process.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreRight. Got it. Good. But what about the start and finish? Are they soold fashionedthat weve lost sight of the two most important parts of every great venture?A process means nothing if you never begin.A pr ocess means nothing if you dont know how to finish.Processes are tools. Processes help keep us focused. They remind us of what were doing. Think about it - if you set out to write a book, you know that you need to first and foremost do the writing. You need to create compelling, interesting prose that you will be proud of, and that others will want to read You have to edit your writing to ensure that it has flow and is error-free.And of course, you need a cover, front and back matter, etc. But the most important part of writing a book is the uhwriting. Both beginning the writing, then finishing the writing of the book. Everything else pales in comparison. If you never begin, if you doubt, fear, worry, wonder, procrastinate, then you never begin. And even if you do begin, if you do these things while youre in the middle, and lose sight of the finish line, then you also will not reach completion.BeginningThe most important part of any venture is thedoing. Which, of course, is why the p rocess matters. But you first must begin You must have the commitment and discipline to actually begin Incredibly, this is lost on so many people. Conversations that I have with young professionals at conferences, speaking engagements and in coaching remind me that dreams without goals are just dreams.Ive heard countless people tell me that they want to launch a vlog. Or they want to be an actor. Writer. Author. Entrepreneur. You name it. And guess what they havent done?Nope, its not abouthaving a website.Nope, its not abouthaving a marketing plan.Nope, its not aboutthe process. They havent started. They havent even begun what their dream. If you never start, the process will never matter. You must begin. You must commit and will yourself to do what you said you were going to do. You must try that strategy, try that idea out, give it a shot. As the old saying goes, If you never try, youll never know. Theres nothing quite like going for it. Because you absolutely will not know or under stand what that means until you do it.Consistency is the true foundation of trust. Either keep your promises or do not make them.?- ?Roy T. BennettSo surely, the process matters, and this article is not meant to diminish the importance of having a plan and process. Far from it. Its meant to awaken our souls and minds to the reality that commitment and consistency are the essential underpinnings to every great venture. Commitment and consistency empower you to begin, to keep going and to reach the finish line.Every great venture, every great story has an ending. Processes by definition are finiteThis is from Merriam-Webstera natural phenomenon marked by gradual changes that lead toward a particular resulta series of actions or operations conducing to anend. We should always focus on the process, but its imperative for us to muster up the courage to begin and to power forward to the finish line of whatever we start. The best of the bestDenzel Washington is a man who knows this well. Bre aking into a mostly white movie industry, he had roles thrown at him earlier in his career that would have paid him a lot of money, but ones that he felt compromised his integrity. He had a very tough decision to make - do I jump at what I can, begin and see it through to completion to take the big paycheck?Or do I have a discerning mind and appetite for how I make my decisions? Do I use my intelligent mind to take ownership over what Ichooseto start and what Ichooseto finish. He knew he had a choice. He knew that everything began with commitment and a willingness to give it a go. If his heart wasnt in it, he wouldnt do it. He talks about how he had concerns of bringing negative energy to the set if he wasnt committed. So he decided to commit to what he truly wanted. He did so with fire, passion, love and belief in himself. And he got going and consistently applied himself to become one of the greatest actors in Hollywood history.Finish what youve startedIts not what we do once in a while that shapes our lives. Its what we do consistently.?- ?Tony RobbinsThe decision to empower ourselves with ownership and choice instills a sense of commitment, and leads us to wanting to press forward with consistency that leads us to the finish line. A process will help us, but so will a closing plan. What will it look like when we finish? What will success look like? How will we celebrate our success?Having this presence of mind to identify that moment in the winners circle will drive you toward consistency. On those morning where you dont want to get out of bed because you fear rejection. On those days on less sleep when your child kept you up all night. On those days where you fear getting started so much, your mind begins to wander and you consider turning back to old habits and vices.Recognize that in those moments, you must press forward. Life and time stop for no one. If you want to go get whats yours, you must begin. You must commit. Youll never, ever know otherwise. As Theodore Roosevelt once wrote, what we should fear most is being in that wretched, place with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat.Begin. Finish. The process will take care of itself. All three phases matter. How to Fight the 3 Biggest Workplace Stressors
How to Fight the 3 Biggest Workplace StressorsHow to Fight the 3 Biggest Workplace StressorsWhen you think about stress, what images come to mind? Spending Sunday night dreading the upcoming work week?Getting caught in backed-up traffic, making you late for an appointment? Having a mound of work on your desk and only two hours to get it all done? If were being honest, we probably need a little stress in our lives, or wed never get anything done. Just think Deadlines usually arent relaxing- but they sure keep us on track when it comes to producing deliverables on time. But not all stressors are good. Stressors that push you into the emotional danger zone can wreak havoc on both your mental well-being and your performance on the job. Living with a sustained level of stress can even hurt you physically, adversely impacting your heart, immune system, and other vital body functions. The worst stressors show up in three common situations. Lets look at what they are, how you can identify th em, and what you can do to diffuse their power.1. You Dont Have the Resources to Meet the Expectations Placed on YouA common definition of stress, attributed to Richard S. Lazarus, is a condition or feeling experienced when a person perceives that demands exceed the personal and social resources the individual is able to mobilize. You know how this one goes. For many it shows up as, I dont have enough time to get everything done, or my workload is too big. Thats pretty much the workplace version of demands exceeding resources, wouldnt you say? The first step in addressing this kind of resource gap is to realize you have one- then, get crystal clear on your priorities. If you arent sure which of your tasks take priority, then everything on your plate becomes one. And if you think everything on your plate is one big priority, you will always feel stressed because you cant possibly get it all done. If you arent able to determine what takes precedence by examining your workload, ask your manager to clarify. Negotiate with him or her if the load binnenseems unrealistic. Then, with the limited time available each day, make sure your attention, energy, and activity are devoted to those key actions. This could mean spending less time checking email, scrolling through Facebook, or sitting in unproductive meetings, and instead, choosing to make good time and energy management decisions. Im not saying its simple or painless- but if you anticipate where this stress is coming from and take steps to correct it, youll make your life much easier2. You Dont Have Control Over Your SituationYour anfhrer is kind and considerate one day unpredictable and mercurial the next. Or, traffic is backed up for miles, and no matter what you do, youre going to miss the big client meeting. Impact on you? Major stress. Unfortunately, you cant have control over some situations life throws at you. (Other peoples behavior. Traffic. People who chew loudly.) This can easily lead you to assume a vic tim mentality and start thinking irrationally. But dwelling on thoughts like my boss is out to get me or nothing is ever going to go right again, wont do much to help the situation- or your stress level. When you dont have control over a stressful situation, the secret is to shift your focus to what you can control. And believe it or not, there is always something you can control, like what you choose to think or what action you choose to take. For example, if your boss is unruly, you can choose to step away and remember that his behavior is not about you its about him. If youre bound to miss the client meeting due to traffic, you can hatch a quick backup plan, advise your teammates of your status, pull off the road, and check in by phone. You can always choose your response to a situation, even if you cant control the situation itself. Along similar lines3. You Dont Have a Choice in Your SituationI hear this one frequently- particularly from women who are the breadwinners of their households. They feel like they dont have a choice in their situation, and the stress that results from that comes out in the comments they make. Its all on my shoulders. I dont have a choice. I cant quit my job.I cant take any risks.Im trapped.Often, this issue stems from the fact that the women didnt intentionally choose to be the completely financially responsible for their households, it just sort of happened- and now, they dont see any way to change it. But when faced with any situation that makes you feel like you dont have a choice- and subsequently stresses you out- your best defense strategy is to recognize the reality You do have choice. If you hate your job, you can quit. There are consequences that come with that choice that might not be desirable to you- but you can choose it. So, rather than thinking I dont have a choice, shift your mindset to, I choose to stay in this role because its less painful than the other option, which would be to quit and no longer be able to pay the mortgage. In the future, I might choose a different path. But for now, this is my choice. Can you see the different energy that comes from the latter statements? Can you see how articulating what your choice is- even if its not one you will make- can mitigate such a stressful situation? When you think you have no choice, look around and recognize your options, consider what the impact would be if you chose one of them, and then reframe your thinking.Theres no doubt that threatening situations stress us out. When we feel like were not going to succeed or when we feel like we dont have control or choice, its easy to feel overwhelmed. But next time you face a stressful situation, I urge you to focus on the action you can take. I promise, little by little, youll get your power back. Not to mention your sanity.Photo of pencil breaking courtesy of Shutterstock.

5 Things to Ask for Before Relocating for a New Job-The Muse
5 Things to Ask for Before Relocating for a New Job-The Muse5 Things to Ask for Before Relocating for a New Job-The MuseMoving is a pain. Even if youre doing it for the job of yur dreams. Youll have to get new a drivers license, switch off the old utilities, switch on the new, sleuth a new doctor, find a new place, sell or sublet your current one- oh, and deal with the physical acts of actually packing, moving, and unpacking. If you got tired just reading that, imagine doing it. Still, CareerBuilder found that 44% of people are willing to relocate for a career opportunity. I am one of those people. Despite my loathsome distaste for the evils of moving, I have relocated my family three times in nine years. (And they still love me)While Im not sure if that demonstrates my inner tendencies toward masochism or psychosis, the one thing of which Im certain is that relocating is always easier if your prospective employer helps with the move. While the days of Cartier-style, full-blown reloc ation packages and outright home purchases for high-demand employees have passed, there are still relocation benefits worth asking and negotiating for before you accept a job out-of-state. Like these.1. Location Scouting TripsOne of the keys to an easy relocation is to make sure that you, your significant other, and your family are all on board with the decision. As a precondition for accepting my respective offers, I asked that each company allow my family to take two or three reconnaissance trips to the new state to look for permanent housing.Even if you dont find the perfect residence during those trips, they are invaluable to ensure that you get a flavor and sense of the new area. A new favorite restaurant or cultural attraction can go a long way in feeling more comfortable about your decision and getting buy-in from anyone who will be moving with you.2. Temporary HousingIf available, this is a great benefit. A month or two rent-free can ease the pressure of a new security depos it or buying a new home ASAP. If you have a family, it gives you time to learn the area and local school districts before committing to a new place. In my experience, the duration of the benefit is negotiable, but usually runs 60-90 days after you start the new job. The company often puts you up in an executive condo, apartment, or home thats used for relocation purposes. Once, a company gave me a lump sum payment of $10,000 for three months worth of housing and living expenses. I immediately went out and bought the most expensive suit I could find to wear on my first day. Kidding I decided to book a three-room extended-stay suite while house hunting. musiknote If youre moving for a higher education position, know that universities will have some housing set aside for visiting professors or transitioning staff. It might be a bare bones, multiple-roommate situation, but its better than signing a lease on an apartment sight unseen.3. Whole-House Pack and TransportIf your employer has a relocation package, make sure you know exactly what it entails. Some arrangements only cover the physical transportation of your home goods, while others may include the actual hand-packing and subsequent unpacking of your boxed chattel. The first relocation we had included everything, so I knew what to negotiate for on each subsequent move because I hated the idea of packing wine glasses and such myself. If your new employer provides a lump sum, be sure to keep all receipts having to do with your move- from boxes, to packing tape, to movers, to gas for the U-Haul. If you move more than 50 miles, you may be able to get a tax deduction for any additional moving expenses you personally absorbed.4. Storage of Home GoodsIt can take some time to find the perfect place to live in your new area. I once spent several months looking for a new home because our first deal fell through. So, you can only imagine how happy I was that I had negotiated storage of our home goods for up to six months after my job started. Its one less stress during a very stressful transition. All of our belongings were safe, secure, and insured at the transportation companys warehouse, while we took our time finding the right place to live.5. Cash Stipend for Miscellaneous ExpensesDuring every move, unforeseen expenses will pop up. Because, life. During my most recent relocation, the company gave us a $5,000 stipend upfront for miscellaneous use. Because we had planned well and had zero out-of-pocket expenses, we were able to apply that entire lump sum toward the closing cost on the purchase of our new home at the time.It was completely legal under the terms of that specific relocation package- and was clearly very helpful.Other uses for this sort of money might include additional rent or mortgage payments if one family member has to stay behind, transportation to your new location, or even a rental car if you only have one and your family is split in two locations.I dont know anyone who looks forward to uprooting for a new job, but sometimes its necessary. Thats why its so important to know relocation packages vary greatly from company to company- and some of them include some pretty great perks to ease the move. So, once you have an offer in hand, be sure to ask about the specific relocation details and components.Theres an old proverb that states, You dont have, because you dont ask. Now youll at least know a few things to ask for when it comes to relocating for a new gig.Photo of packing boxes courtesy of Shutterstock.

How to Tailor Your Business#8217;s Communication Strategy to Meet Job Seekers#8217; Needs
How to Tailor Yur Business8217s Communication Strategy to Meet Job Seekers8217 Needs Successfully communicating amessage depends on a lot of things the delivery method, the target audience, the end goal, and of course, the message itself. Whether youregiving a speech or reaching out to candidates, how you say something is just as important as what you say.In the field of recruiting specifically, how long it takes you to say something can make all the difference. As the CEO of a absatzwirtschaft and advertising firm that helps companies tailor their employer brands and recruiting messages to find top talent, I know how communication can make or break a job search, an encounter with a colleague, or even a client interaction.Take the following three situations, for exampleMissed Employment Connections1. A young man applies for several jobs on a local job board. He recently graduated from college and is in a hurry to get his first job, but he doesnt hear from any of the companies to which he applied. Discouraged, he takes the first offer he gets for $10,000 less than he had been hoping. Two months into his new position, he begins receiving letters from the other companies he applied to, two of which inform him he was not suitable, and four ask him to give their recruiters a call.2. A middle-aged woman has been seeking employment for four months. In a last-ditch effort to locate a position, she shows up at the office to personally drop off her application and resume. The receptionist takes the resume right as the recruiter walks by. The recruiter, busy and about to take her lunch, is put off by the womans intrusion and never follows up on the resume.3. Acapable HR representative for a small manufacturing plant needs to hire a vice president of sales. Her boss keeps changing the requirements and salary for the position, forcing her to put potential candidates who have interviewed for the position in a holding-gesellschaft pattern. On e candidate calls her three times a day to get an update on the position. His persistence eventually wears her patience thin she decides not to pursue the candidate due to cultural fit. What Went Wrong? These are all real situations that I have encountered in the last quarter. In everycase, the question of whether or not the candidate was capable or qualified never even came up because communication between the applicant and employer was so flawed. Messaging, timing, and delivery on both sides failed tomatch what the other expected, and in every case, it turned out poorly for one party. In the first case, the job seeker had every right to expect an electronic response regarding the position of his applications. The responses he received, by and large, did not align with his initial expectations of the companies. Because of his assumption that recruiters and HR pros would respond with some sense of urgency, he decided to go with one company over the others. In the example of the woman wh o dropped by the office, her mistake was assuming that her eagerness would be read as a positive instead of as an intrusion on an already busy day. In this case, she did not get the job because she didnt tailor her message properly, nor did she pay attention to her timing or delivery. In our final example, a lack of preparation on the companys part brings out the worst in an otherwise capable candidate. He was interviewed, so he must have some of the desired qualities. However, thanks to his persistence beyond the reasonable or comfortable, his resume immediately went from the desk to the wastebasket. Both parties failed in their attempts to communicate.Better Communication Benefits EveryoneHow can you avoid situations like the above? Focus on more than the message. In each situation, we can see where the recruiter or HR professional was at fault, but we also see places where the job seeker or candidate could have prepped their message better. When crafting your message as a job seeke r, think about how you want others to perceive it.As for recruiters, if your company does business on social channels, youre obligated to respond there as well. If you accept resumes via email, you are required to respond via email. Think about when you communicate with candidates, too. If you demand 45 minutes to get through your tedious erreichbar application, you must give at least that much time to candidates who put in the effort. Finally, consider the information you request from the candidate. Can you provide at least that much information to your job-seeking public? Of course you can A simple blog post that describes your application process, a wiki that answers commonly-asked questions, and an autoresponder that makes candidates laugh are just a few simple ways you can avoid the aforementioned missed opportunities.A version of this article originally appeared on Forbes.Maren Hogan is founder and CEO ofRed Branch Media. You can read more of her work on Forbes, Business Insider , Entrepreneur, and her blog,Marenated.

Delta is trying to make economy class fancy
Delta is trying to make economy class fancyDelta is trying to make economy class fancyNo matter how many technological breakthroughs we make, somehow being a passenger on a plane today in economy class is still just about the worst thing ever. From the cramped seats to the lousy food to the never knowing if youll have WiFi or not and flight attendant service, sometimes its almost funny how miserable flying in the year 2018 is. But one airline is trying to change things for the sad peasants that fly economy. Are they give them bigger seats? No. But they will be giving them more alcohol and better meals.Onlong-haul flightsbetween Portland, Oregon andTokyoDelta will be testing out a new fine dining service. Passengers sitting in economy will have access to Welcome Bubbles (Prosecco and peach pure) or a glass of LaCroix, San Pellegrino or Seagrams. I mean you know you are classy if you are drinking LaCroix on a plane. And like the better people sitting in first class, ansicht passengers will get a printed menu with meal choices including a salad with quinoa and pine nuts, pasta with cauliflower andHagen-Dazs ice cream.Who cares if you cant move your legs when youve got quinoa on your salad? This is as good as dining at a fancy restaurant (if you had to wear a seat belt and couldnt use the bathroom at certain times.)Though this is only a trial run a possible rollout for international Delta flights could happen as soon as November according to Conde Nast Traveler.

Employees Reveal What its Like to Work at Apple.
Employees Reveal What its Like to Work at Apple. Employees Reveal What its Like to Work at Apple. As a brand, Apple is worth $145.3 billion, which makes it the most valuable brand in the world. It is also one of the most globally admired companies and there are many who dream of working under the bitten apple symbol. If youre one of them, be sure to be awesome at what youre doing because working at Apple simply isnt for just anybody. How to get work at Apple? If you eventually get a work at Apple, youâre allowed to boast a little. Apple chooses its employees very carefully they let only the best people in the industry working for them, so getting hired might work as an effective ego booster. Find out what its like to work at Apple according to employees Apple Inc. is headquartered in Cupertino, California. Its main campus was getting a bit too small so the Apple leaders decided to build a new one, one mile east from the current one, and its already getting nicknames such as spaceship or donut thanks to its circular, quite extravagant design. So, how does it feel to work at Apple? At first glance it may seem that working for Apple alone is a dream come true, but its not always butterflies and rainbows. Apple allegedly pays its employees well, which is a generally strong argument. There are also plenty of perks that the Apple employees get, such as discounts for all the Apple products, lots of team building events with free food and drinks and, as the story goes, great bosses who let you think for yourself and come up with your own ideas. And of course, free supply of apples for everybody! A great advantage is that work at Apple increases your chances to get hired when you next apply for a job . Having Apple Inc. written in your work experience section of your resume definitely gets you some extra points. Despite all this, many former Apple employees have stated on Quora or Glassdoor that their day-to-day lives at Apple werent always as terrific as everyone thinks. Many said theres a huge secrecy in the office together with a certain amount of paranoia from the team leaders. Employees are not allowed to talk to anybody about what they are working on and are allegedly threatened to be fired if they but mention something to their spouse or colleague. At Apple, working on a new product comes very close to a top secret mission. Some people complain about the work environment being âtoo corporateâ and many agree on a fact that working at Apple is nowhere as cool as working in, say, Facebook, Google or LinkedIn. Apple offices are said to be very strict and rigid, providing no fun and relaxing amenities to their employees. No napping rooms, ping-pong, foosball or gym? How awful is that?! Its all just work, work, work there at the Cupertino campus so it seems. For those of you who dream of working at Apple one day, be prepared to be the best of the best. In their own words: âWeâre perfectionists. Idealists. Inventors. Forever tinkering with products and processes, always on the lookout for better. Whether you work at one of our global offices, offsite, or even at home, a job at Apple will be demanding. But it also rewards bright, original thinking and hard work. And none of us here would have it any other way.â Share Your Feedback or Ideas in the Comments!

Are There Lies on Your Resume Most Likely, Yes!
Are There Lies on Your Resume Most Likely, Yes! Are There Lies on Your Resume Most Likely, Yes! 2Maybe itâs because youâre applying for too many positions- and not getting enough callbacks. Or maybe itâs because youâve been job searching for what seems like centuries (even though itâs only been about a month). That can explain why youâre starting to feel a little, well, desperate and might start âembellishingâ your job application in the hopes of landing a job. For whatever reason, most people have lies on their resume. Honestly, youâre not alone. Are There Lies on Your Resume? Most Likely, Yes! According to research from HireRight, a candidate due diligence company, nearly two-thirds of job applicants (63 percent) have fibbed a bit on their job application. HireRight discovered that job applications with a little white lie sprinkled here and there has reached its highest level since 2011. Their findings about resume lies come from an account analysis of 100,000 checks from 26,000 applications. On their most recent quarterly Candidate Health Check report, they found that job candidates were likely to put down incorrect info in the education section of their resume, to the tune of nearly 39 percent. But it doesnât end there. More than one-third (36 percent) of job seekers have lied about their employment history, and nearly three in ten (30 percent) have made false claims about their professional qualifications, skills, and memberships. And if you think that all of these resume lies only pertains to certain job seekers, think again. Even executive-level job applicants are telling tall tales, too- and the number has risen every quarter for the past 18 months. An estimated 25 percent of job applications for directorâs positions contain inaccurate information. This equals a 40 percent increase in falsified job applications compared to the same time last year. While research found that most organizations were more trustworthy of the people applying for senior positions, it seems that anyone is capable of embellishing their job application. As a job seeker, what does this mean for you? For starters, itâs important to always tell the truth on your resume and cover letter. After all, itâs becoming much easier for employers to review your job application and confirm if the info on it is true or false. If a potential boss does discover that youâve lied, you can not only kiss that job goodbye, but probably any chances of working for that company, both now and in the future. Also, you never know who your prospective boss might know; depending on the whoppers youâve told on your job application, he could mention your name (and the lies youâve told) to fellow colleagues in the industry, and you could create a bad reputation for yourself before youâve even landed a job. Fight the temptation to stretch the truth. As tempting as it might be to stretch the truth a little, keep your job application as clean as possible. If some parts seem weak, find ways in which to strengthen them without lying. If you have employment gaps that youâre trying to cover, switch resume formats. Lacking skills? Try bulking them up by taking a course online or volunteering while you job search. There are ways to get around putting lies on your resume. Be smart, be honest, and stay strong during your job search, and youâll soon find a position that youâll love. Honest. Readers, do you have lies on your resume or cover letter? Have you ever gotten caught? Let us know what happened in the comments below!

Goal! Keeping Sports Available to Kids
Goal! Keeping Sports Available to Kids Goal! Keeping Sports Available to Kids At Robert Half, what we do is helping people do what they love. For Jim Dinneen, that extends outside the office. Dinneen, the executive director of Robert Halfâs Salaried Professional Service, co-founded and helps run a nonprofit foundation called Spartans4Life that enables children to play hockey - even when the cost of the sport gets prohibitive for their families. Along with a handful of friends and local business leaders in the New Hampshire area, Dinneen created the nonprofit as an arm of the Sports4Life Foundation, which started in Canada. The goal is to provide financial aid to families in need, so that their sons or daughters can keep playing the sport they love. With equipment, tournament fees, ice rink time and other costs, playing in a hockey league can cost a few thousand dollars, whether for a 6-year-old child or an 18-year-old high schooler. Hockey has always been a big part of Dinneenâs life, starting with his high school and college days as an athlete. He even played professionally for a couple of years in the minor leagues. His 12-year-old son and 6-year-old daughter play the sport, following in their fatherâs skate tracks. Based in Manchester, N.H., Dinneen still remembers the first time his organization was able to help someone, about four years ago. A parent in his kidsâ league, where he volunteer-coaches, was diagnosed with cancer. The family ended up in debt, but the group was able to fully fund everything for their son to continue playing hockey. âItâs a little thing that allows them some normalcy,â Dinneen said. âAnd the parents didnât have to worry about their child not being able to play. That was really rewarding.â Since then, the organization has been able to repeat the gift of sports over and over again. Dinneen has found that hockey teaches important life skills, including teamwork and discipline. The group organizes three or four fundraisers a year, most of which are held on weekends. Sure, it takes a lot of time to plan events and manage a nonprofit. But much like how we work here, Dinneen finds that technology and mobility are most helpful in fitting everything in. âWe mostly do conference calls at night, and it doesnât matter where Iâm at - California, Boston or wherever,â Dinneen said. Moreover, taking on this kind of commitment isnât a struggle to balance with other parts of his life because he does it with his friends, so they integrate responsibilities with family and friend time. âOur whole families will get together to hang out,â Dinneen said. âWe carve out some time to plan our next fundraiser, decide where to allocate money and discuss other board business. âItâs a commitment, but itâs extremely rewarding, especially when we get a letter from a family weâve assisted saying how much their kid loves hockey,â Dinneen continued. âIt matters that they get to keep doing the thing they love.â

While Youll Be Unpacking Your Presents, These People Will Be Working
While Youll Be Unpacking Your Presents, These People Will Be Working While Youll Be Unpacking Your Presents, These People Will Be Working Maybe you havenât given it a thought yet, but there are thousands of employees at work while weâre scoffing turkey and squabbling over who gets control of the television remote. For example doctors or nurses, those that work in international trade or emergency services. These and many other professionals keep the country ticking over while the rest of us are enjoying ourselves. They deserve our gratitude for their perseverance and willingness to make the Christmas magic work for all of us. Letâs now zoom in on 6 professions that simply never sleep and require working during the festive season, too. 1. Zookeepers If you happen to be a zookeeper, your Christmas could easily be looking after a handful of squirrel monkeys. Christmas Day is usually the only day of the year that the zoo is shut to visitors. But the animals to care are still there. They need to be cleaned and get something to eat as usual. But besides that, animals in the zoos the world over get some holiday pampering, too. âWe get about 45 minutes for lunch rather than half an hour. It is Christmas after all.â Jon Ovens, zookeeper Monkeys feast on boxes full of nuts to rip open. Chimps get a mince pie along with their usual fruit and veggies. Lemurs enjoy pinecones stuffed with some treats. And other animals love to play games and do some training, finally being able to enjoy zookeepersâ undivided attention. 2. Firefighters These tough guys have to work shifts and holidays are no exception. Fires can start unexpectedly so there needs to be someone on duty all year round. âItâs not ideal working Christmas Day but I think itâs part of the job. It comes with the responsibilty as a firefighter. I think my family understand that as well.â Phil Bennett, firefighter For firefighters, itâs important to stay alert 24/7 at this time of year. Christmas Day can actually get quite busy with small kitchen fires. Especially in the country, itâs not uncommon for people to get their ovens alight, ending up with a burnt turkey or worse. Their Christmas Day, just like any other, starts with a routine. Thereâs a roll call at âchange of watchâ when the day shift crews take over from the night shift crews. Daily sustenance for the crew usually consists of a tray of tea, coffee and biscuits (and perhaps a mince pie at this time of the year). The daily schedule would have the crew performing training drills but on Christmas Day theyre excused to skip it. Instead, theyâre invested in crafting their own Christmas lunch thatâs prepared, cooked and consumed practically âon-the-runâ. 3. Doctors and nurses Hospital staff have to take care of patients staying in hospitals with conditions that prevent them from going home such as fractures or muscle infections. Nurses are giving them medications and helping them with their eating, drinking and keeping clean. But during Christmas, their competencies extend to providing entertainment and doing their best to create a festive atmosphere. âIn one unit I worked in, the staff had a tradition of best Christmas jumper on Christmas day with a prize for the winner. This was always a subject of fierce competition amongst the staff over who could get the tackiest, brightest jumper.â Ruth Underdown, specialist nurse Many of those staying on the ward are older patients. For a majority of them, itâs the first Christmas they are spending away from home. The experience can be naturally quite upsetting. So nurses need to make sure their patients see a friendly face and that everythingâs as pleasant as it can be. Sometimes they also provide assistance to patients that want to wear something special for Christmas. Not only do nurses help them pick their outfit, but also get washed, get dressed and brush their hair. People often take things like this for granted but older people appreciate tiny little details that their days consist of. From helping with unwrapping the presents on the Christmas Day to watching telly with them for a bit, thereâs always something heartwarming that nurses can do for those that canât be with their families and relatives. 4. Ship pilots The shopping spree we all fall for every December makes the festive season an extremely busy time for global shipping. The responsibility of making your Amazon or eBay package arrive on time falls on maritime transport and huge international ships. The job of a ship pilot involves guiding vessels through dangerous waters and bringing them into the harbour. Along the way, they need to ensure the safety of the ship, protect the environment and speed up the process to save shipping firms money. Although ship owners usually do their best to get the ships in before the holidays, ship pilots never actually know whether or not theyre going to work on Christmas Day. 5. Meteorologists Many people travel about at Christmas and meteorologists need to make sure everyones safe and sound while they do. Besides picking the best weather windows for travelling, they also must inform the public should any poor weather conditions occur. Christmas Day of a weather forecaster involves briefing all types of media so that broadcasters and news websites can provide reliable information. And also - an extremely important task - answering the question whether 2018 will officially have a white Christmas. 6. Midwives Midwives spend the Christmas Day with their colleagues on the labour ward looking after women during labour, delivering babies and caring for them after delivery. With the responsibilities of the job always at the forefront of their minds, midwives can afford no distractions. When delivering a baby regardless of time, night or day, their focus must remain solely on the health and welfare of both mother and baby. However, the atmosphere after birth is lighter and more festive than usual - Christmas is a celebration of a birth and new family, after all. âTheres a competition among the hospital units to create the best decoration. Last year the maternity unit created an advent calendar with the babies born each day written in each window.â Sarah-Louise Laing, midwife Living the magic of Christmas Christmas invites us to slow down. Its a special time of the year that makes us realise everything is a gift. So spare a thought for those who will be hard at work while youâre opening presents, messing about with your new gadgets or sipping a glass of red wine. Their jobs require them to work be it day or night and leave their comfy couch for an office chair. While away from their families, theyâll be beneficial to the society they belong to and serve those who truly need it. And thatâs what Christmas is really about, right? Why I Spoke to My Boss About My Insecurities - The Muse
Why I Spoke to My Boss About My Insecurities - The Muse Why I Spoke to My Boss About My Insecurities I recently ran into a bit of a snag on a project I was working on. And no matter what I tried, it just felt like I was never going to get it right. So, after staring at the same document for a couple of days, I did something I never thought Iâd do: I told my boss I was having a hard time and opened up about how insecure this made me feel. At first, I immediately regretted approaching her. After all, sheâs my boss, and not only do I respect and admire her, I was afraid of looking completely lost in front of her. But, when she gave me the exact confidence boost I needed, I ended up learning some valuable lessons about admitting that I wasnât feeling my best. 1. Not Getting Something Right the First Time Doesnât Make You Bad at Your Job I tend to be hard on myself, even though as a full-time writer, I know that very few people write first drafts that are just so good, their editors say, âThis is incredible, letâs just run it!â However, itâs totally understandable for people in any line of work to feel like theyâre just the worst because their first pass at something didnât go as planned. Of course, this isnât something Iâm typically good at understanding, because like everyone else, I dream of being the exception. But hereâs what I have to remember: Sometimes my first drafts are strong, and other times, theyâre just a little more challenging than anticipated. But, that doesnât make me bad at my job. And it doesnât make you bad at yours, either. 2. Admitting You Need Help Makes You a Better Teammate Iâm fortunate enough to work with some insanely smart people on a daily basis, so I put a lot of pressure on myself to get things done without much help. And although my mother would probably approve of this mindset to a certain extent, thereâs one serious flaw with this kind of thinking. If you donât understand something, you actually could be holding back your team from getting something critical done. Whatâs worse, nobodyâs going to know how much youâre struggling if you donât speak up for yourself. So, when I fessed up to my boss about how down I was feeling, not only did I get the confidence boost I needed, I also got the chance to talk the project out with her. And ultimately, we realized it was a project that required more thought, would take more time, and require me to ask a few other people some additional questions. All good things, right? From where Iâm sitting, theyâre all things I would have never realized if I hadnât gotten up the courage to admit I was stuck. 3. Even the Most Experienced People Need a Little Encouragement The more people I talk to about this whole thing, the more that I realize that some of the most talented people I know run into this problem, too. While it was a little bit of a shock to me at first, it makes perfect sense. Because who on the face of this earth knows what theyâre doing 100% of the time. And how many people, no matter how smart they are, have gone their entire lives without asking for a little bit of help? Sure, there are plenty of people out there who havenât asked outright for a bit of a confidence boost, but Iâd wager that nobody you know has done his or her job without asking for assistance at one point or another. Sometimes when youâre working hard, you hit a wall. And when you hit that wall, itâs perfectly OK to ask for a few words of encouragement, even if youâre the best at whatever it is you do for a living. Iâm sure there are plenty of people who would still feel uneasy about going up to a boss or colleague and saying, âHey, this projectâs making me feel like an idiot. Can you remind me why I was chosen to lead it?â And Iâll admit that it still makes me uncomfortable, especially since I still havenât figured out how to stop beating myself up when I donât do something perfectly. But, every time Iâve asked for a little help, I remembered that saying those words aloud doesnât cause the world to collapse. And when I asked for a little bit of a pep talk from my boss recently, I didnât get fired or lose her trust. If anything, I became a little better at my job in ways I wouldnât have if I hadnât spoken up about how I was feeling a little lost. So, next time you need that confidence boost, think about straight up asking for it. And, taking this concept a little further, the next time you see a colleague struggling give him or her a few words of encouragement yourself.

Customizing Wheelchairs with 3D Printing
Customizing Wheelchairs with 3D Printing Customizing Wheelchairs with 3D Printing Customizing Wheelchairs with 3D Printing How many owners have a seat in their car that truly shapes to their body? And how many can say the same about their favorite chair at home? But lets say were talking about a wheelchair. Says Benjamin Hubert, design director of Layer, based in London, UK: With wheelchairs, many people dont have nearly enough choices. And when you think about how people rely on wheelchairs, with better customization, what a difference it could make. And thats what Huberts team might just be able to do: make a difference. As it has with many attempts to improve physical comfort, the 3D printer is very much at the center of this mission, creating the seat and footrest of the custom models created by Layer. The project started with looking at the wheelchair category but 3D printing came later, he says. We found there just wasnt enough being done for users, from asymmetry to body shape and more. Research is so critical in our work. Biometric data is key, with the user creating data points and its translated through algorithm to generative structure and the structure is different each time. The computer cant entirely measure, so manual human assessment is used in combination with data being translated. The custom form of the seat and foot-bay is driven by 3D digital data derived from mapping each users biometric information. Image: Layer Part of the design comes from users being fit into foam, he says. The foam is a pre-mold, with the user sitting in the foam. It then cures to hold the shape and then is sent to be 3D scanned. Among the many aspects of a customized chair, one might not think about the comfort of users feet, but its critical to the user experience, Hubert says. We can scan peoples feet and work with insoles, he says. A leading problem is that users can find that their feet will turn in and thats an area of strong frustration. But customization is also about determining the features certain users dont want, he says. For one person who gave us feedback, theyd go out with friends and find theyd push them with assisting bars and without permission, he says. They felt like a doll. There is also a clear need in the area of style, he says. They can be very mechanical, boxy frames and many users would like a better visual, he says. Many users want to be seen first, head-on, instead of the chair. One current design is a specific frame that works with a 3D printing system. You cant just retrofit the seat to any existing frame, he says. The frame for the design is a single-post, sort of T-shaped framework. The seat mounts on to the single post. That single post set-up allows for freedom of flexibility. The printer utilized for the prototype is an industrial-sized type called Mammoth, approximately three meters by one meter, he says. Though the work so far has been encouraging, Hubert says, hes quick to remind that theyre still in prototype mode. Its not simple when you think of a prototyping process and then, on top of it, that its the medical industry, Hubert says. Challenges include cost and efficiency of the process. Its a positive process but you still have to remember that this can take a decent amount of years to get to the end. Hubert says the present estimate is that the product would get to the user in two weeks, with the actual printing time being approximately three days. As a designer, your ambition is to solve problems and make things incrementally better for people, he says of the project, which has also involved extensive road testing. These users deserve a chair that fits them well, in many ways. Eric Butterman is an independent writer. As a designer, your ambition is to solve problems and make things incrementally better for people. These users deserve a chair that fits them well, in many ways.Benjamin Hubert, Layer

Glassdoor: Given the full spectrum of information security roles at ManTech, what are the core elements of the interview process? What can candidates expect from the experience? Srini N. Iyer: Candidates typically start with a phone screen with a recruiter who is talking them not only to ensure they have the right experience for the role but to ensure that the role weâre considering them for aligns with their long-term career interest. We go through multiple rounds of interviews. In the first round, we evaluate the candidateâs technical skills and capabilities. This could be a one-on-one or a panel interview with a team of technologists. At the next round, we have important stakeholders meet with the candidate to evaluate functional and domain knowledge. If needed, we bring the candidate in for a follow-up interview to evaluate other relevant soft skills. Throughout the process we expect candidates to be interviewing us as well. We want to ensure that new employees coming on board know what to expect and are truly excited for their roles. Glassdoor: What questions do you personally like to ask candidates you interview with? Srini N. Iyer: Typically, I provide a sample task, scenario or problem during my interviews. Iâd like to see how the candidate thinks on their feet. Iâd also like to see how they approach the problem, understand their logical and analytical skills, along with their technical capabilities. Iâve been known to offer up my whiteboard so candidates can also draw out their concepts and solutions as they are explaining them. Glassdoor: What are 2 to 3 red flags that turn you off to a candidate? What are traits that go against ManTechâs values and mission? Srini N. Iyer: Someone whoâs not a self-starter or a go-getter, essentially waiting to be told what to do next. Someone not passionate about their field or area of expertise. Someone who tries to oversell their skills/capabilities. ManTech is all about supporting our customerâs mission and protecting our country. We are all about collaboration â" working within and across teams, sharing information. We are not looking for individual heroes, weâre looking for superstars who thrive in team environments. Glassdoor: There have been many companies shifting towards hiring for skills as opposed to experience. What is ManTechâs approach to skills-based hiring? How much on-the-job training is available? Srini N. Iyer: Due to the success in our business growth, we have had the need to bring in both skills and experience to support our customers. By staying close to our customers and anticipating their needs we resort to skills-based hiring. Third-party certifications and ability to stay current on certifications is a requirement for certain critical positions. In those scenarios, we will look for skills-based hiring. We also provide a significant amount of on-the-job training. There are over 7,000 courses offered at ManTech University. This is why you should publicize your failures and not be ashamed
This is why you should publicize your failures and not be ashamed This is why you should publicize your failures and not be ashamed Itâs been one year since I started the Famous Failures podcast, where I interview the worldâs most interesting people about their failures and what they learned from them. As you might imagine, asking guests to appear on the show has made for some interesting conversations.âHey Dan, I have a podcast where I interview failures. Youâd be perfect for it.âSurprisingly though, most people Iâve approached have been eager to appear on the show because they know firsthand what many neglect: Anyone whoâs done anything meaningful has failed in some fashion. Having interviewed 40 titans on the podcast- including top entrepreneurs, Olympic medalists, and New York Times bestselling authors- one thing is clear: Everyone- and I mean, everyone- is a walking imperfection. But most of us are terrible at owning up to our goofs. Our public image is synonymous with our self-worth. We puff ourselves up and create curated portrayals of our imperfect and flawed lives. We round off the edge s, airbrush the negatives, and present a perfect image to the world devoid of any failures.Even when we talk about our failures, we do so in a flattering light. Our response resembles the typical answer to the much-dreaded Whatâs your biggest weakness? interview question: I work too hard.I get it. Itâs painful to fail. Airing your failures can compound the pain. But the opposite approach- denial and avoidance- make things worse. When we pretend we didnât fail, when we reframe our failures as successes, or when we hold funerals for failed startups complete with bagpipes and DJs spinning records- as Silicon Valley does- we donât learn anything. In order to learn and grow, we must acknowledge our failures, without celebrating them. Take, for example, the approach of Sara Blakely, the founder and CEO of Spanx. She went from selling fax machines door-to-door to becoming the worldâs youngest self-made female billionaire. At company-wide meetings, Blakely highlights her own âoo psâ moments. Likewise, Ed Catmull- the president of Pixar and Disney Animation Studios- talks about the mistakes heâs made at new employee orientations: âWe do not want people to assume that because weâre successful, everything we do is right,â he explains. . The economist Tyler Cowen wrote a detailed analysis of how, in the lead-up to the 2007 financial crisis, he âbadly underestimated the chance that something systemic had gone wrong in the American economy.â âI regret that I was wrong,â Cowen wrote, âand I regret that I was overconfident in my belief that I was right.âAcknowledging failures is particularly important for role models- leaders, teachers, and celebrities. We tend to put them on a pedestal. We assume theyâre superheroes with skills and talents that mere mortals lack. We believe their success was predestined and cooked into their DNA.But if we saw the messy reality behind the seemingly untarnished glamour, we would be more comfortable to make mistakes and less likely to become paralyzed when failures start to hit. With their failures revealed, our role models look more human and less divine. This is why Wharton professor Adam Grant opens his very first class with a story about his biggest failures. âI want students to feel comfortable challenging me, asking me questions, seeking help, and asking advice,â Grant told me.Leading by example is cliche- because it works.Research shows that people pay close attention to the leaderâs behavior since they depend on the leader for recognition. Research also shows that people look to the leader to take the first step in initiating a change. If leaders fail to acknowledge their failures- if thereâs a perception that the leader can do no wrong- itâs unrealistic to expect employees to take the risk of challenging the leader or revealing their own failures.Consider a study of sixteen hospitals with top-tier cardiac surgery departments. The cardiac teams led by surgeons who were more willing to acknowledge their own fallibility were the most successful at implementing an innovative technology for conducting surgery. For example, one surgeon repeatedly told his team: âI need to hear from you because Iâm likely to miss things.â Another surgeon would say, âI screwed up. My judgment was bad in this case.âWhat made these messages effective was their repetition.Entrenched behaviors donât change with one impassioned speech. As team members heard these messages over and over again, they developed the psychological safety to speak up- even in an environment as hierarchical as heart surgery. âThere are no sacred cows,â a member of one surgery team explained, âIf somebody needs to be told something, then they are told- surgeon or orderly.âWhether youâre in the operating room, the boardroom, or the classroom, the principle is the same: The road to success is filled with potholes. Youâre better off acknowledging them than pretending the y donât exist.Ozan Varol is a rocket scientist turned law professor and bestselling author. How to Use Your Parent Experience to Find a Job
How to Use Your Parent Experience to Find a Job How to Use Your Parent Experience to Find a Job How to Use Your Parent Experience to Find a Job Courtesy: www.setantafitness.com Becoming a parent is an amazing life changing experience. There is nothing quite like it and it is something I highly recommend to everyone, that is like another kind of career coaching based on real practice and leading by your child. However, taking time off work to look after your brood can undoubtedly leave you feeling that you are behind your peers when it comes to finding a job after time out. Your confidence can take a knock and you may feel that you are lacking some skills when filling out that job application. What you may not have considered, is the arsenal of skills and experiences that you will have built up since becoming a parent, that will go on to serve you well in any job. When applying for roles, donât just turn to work experience when looking for examples, there are many other areas that will contribute to skill development and becoming a parent is one of them. Time management You may have thought you were good at managing your time before. Your job may have required you to prioritise work-loads, manage the timings of others and work to strict deadlines. Since becoming a parent, you have managed your time to ensure that you are able to get out of the house in time with toddlers in tow (not an easy task), managed multiple meal times, nap times, school runs and bedtime schedules to ensure minimal meltdowns, whilst co-ordinating monumental washing loads on top of all of your everyday tasks. Donât under-estimate this. Patience Patience is taken to a whole new level when youâre a parent. Dealing with toddler tantrums, crying through the night and meals youâve spent ages preparing to be shunted by your little darlings takes an enormous amount of patience. Patience may not seem like a skill but if you can deal with the things that children throw at you and take it in your stride, you will have developed the skill of becoming more tolerant and accepting of others. Managing conflict Managing conflict may be key in some job roles and as a parent, you will have had plenty of experience of this. You will have developed ways to stop your children fighting but also ways of navigating through potentially hostile situations with other parents. There are a number of things you may be able to draw on here. Multi-tasking Multi-tasking becomes such an every-day occurrence when youâre a parent that you might not consider it a skill. However, if you are able to sculpt Play-Doh masterpieces whilst holding a baby and making the dinner, any job role which requires you to do more than one thing at a time will seem like a breeze. Communication Having a young child requires you to adopt alternative means of communication. You have to adapt the way you speak so that they can understand and you will be relying much more heavily on body language, facial expressions and gestures to communicate with your baby. You may even learn baby sign. Becoming a parent also often means starting a whole different life socially. You will be getting out and meeting new people at various groups. All of these things are a fantastic way to improve your communication skills. Budgeting You might be lucky enough not to have to worry about money but chances are, your finances will take a knock if youâre not working or are on maternity/paternity leave. This will require you to be much stricter financially and to set budgets. This is the sort of skill that will serve you well in many jobs. Problem Solving Examples of problem solving abilities donât just have to be from work. There are going to be countless times when as a parent, you have had to solve a problem to make your family happy. Whether it was a question of finances, childcare arrangements or ways to get fruit and vegetables into your children, you will have a whole wealth of examples.
